BUILDINGS, INFRASTRUCTURE
AND LONG-TERM OBLIGATION
Historic buildings and infrastructure deteriorate gradually without planned repair and maintenance. That means
a continuing need to invest in:
• Roofs, stonework and structural timber
• Drainage, tracks, roads and utilities
• Public rights of way and woodland management
Much of this work generates little or no immediate financial return, but it is essential to prevent long-term decline and
eventual loss. Because the Estate is planned and managed over a fifteen-year horizon, investment must be prioritised
and sequenced so that essential works can be funded responsibly over time.
THE COST OF HERITAGE
Some essential work brings no financial return but must be done to prevent decline, such as the walls pictured
above. Just one side cost over £100,000 to repair with skilled craftsmen.
Delay increases cost through inflation and further deterioration. Active reuse and reinvestment are what help
keep buildings in use and fund the ongoing cycle of maintenance and repair. Buildings are better off in use.
